Kiehl’s Youth Dose Eye Treatment Review

It’s 2019 and I’m turning 37 in a few weeks. So let’s call a spade a spade: I’m starting to look my age and it’s time to pull out the big guns. In comes Kiehl’s Youth Dose Eye Treatment, an anti-aging eye cream with Pro-Retinol, Vitamic C and Grape Seed extract. You know things are serious when they contain Retinol. I’ve been testing the product for six weeks and here are my thoughts.

Price point, quantity & practical info

Price: $39 (Kiehl’s US website), €39.50 in Europe.

Quantity: 15ml

The product comes in a plastic tube which only dispenses the necessary dosage so to prevent waste. Very handy!

Kiehl’s products are claimed to be made with natural ingredients, but that unfortunately doesn’t make the brand cruelty-free. Like its parent company L’Oreal, it doesn’t test on animals unless required by law.

Aqua/Water, Dimethicone, Glycerin, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer
Hydroxypropyl Tetrahydropyrantriol, Isonoyl Isononanoate, Propylene Glycol, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Octyldodecanol, Lauryl PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Boron, Nitride, CI 77891/Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Phenoxyethanol, PEG/PPG- 18/18 Dimethicone, Silica Silylate, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, CI 77163/Bismuth Oxychloride, Sodium Hyaluronate, Chlorphenesin, Magnesium Sulfate, Sodium Hydroxide, Caffeine, Retinyl Palmitate
Vitis Vinifera Seed Extract/Grape Seed Extract, Capryloyl Salicylic Acid
Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Tetrasodium EDTA, CI 77491/Iron Oxides, Adenosine, Pentylene Glycol, Tocopherol

This looks like a shit-ton of products, but according to the ingredients analyzer in Skincarisma, the product is paraben-free, sulfate-free, allergen-free, alcohol-free. It’s packed with silicones, though, and this is quite easy to notice when applying the product.

What are the claims?

According to the official website, Kiehl’s Youth Dose Treatment:

  • smooths, hydrates and brightens the undereye area (after the first use)
  • reduces fine lines and wrinkles (after two weeks)
  • is lightweight and absorbs quickly
  • has a creamy texture

What I have to say about Kiehl’s Youth Dose Treatment

You have no idea how many times I rolled my eyes while I was typing the claims above.

I have been using this product for over six weeks and I can’t wait to empty it and never see it again. Here’s why:

My main beef with it is that, whether you use very little product (as recommended) or not, it will pill within 30 minutes. I have tried applying it in the smallest amounts and nothing helped. I don’t mind this at night when I’m drenched in skincare and ready to go to bed, but in the daytime I just can’t apply makeup on top of it. I’ve found myself having to remove foundations and concealers under my eyes because Kiehl’s Youth Dose Treatment made them sit weird on my skin. If you know me, you know concealers mean the world to me. Here’s the proof.

I can’t see the immediate brightening and smoothing results either. Of course, it does hydrate (when I don’t have to take it off to apply makeup). But you would expect more from a $39 product.

Can’t see a difference? Me neither.

After six weeks, I don’t feel like my fine lines and wrinkles are less visible. I’m not sure what this product has done for me all this time, to be honest. I’m a sucker for Kiehl’s products but this one has been a huge disappointment.

What a bummer that this cream was such a dud! Eye creams are honestly such a struggle because if a product is too hydrating it will cause milia under my eye, but then if I don’t see any real improvement in how my eye area looks then I feel like I’m not getting my money’s worth.

I’ve been using both of the DE eye creams (purchased them in two different mini kits) and of the two, I’ve been enjoying the Shaba Eye Complex Serum the most (because I can apply this all around the eye). I use like half a pump for both eyes – so even my little version has lasted me about a month and a half now.

Does it help with hydration *and* fine lines or puffiness, though? I’m willing to invest, but at that price point I have super high expectations.
I’ve just switched to Kiehl’s Avocado eye cream and I find it much better than the Youth thingy.

hmm – so my major problem is dark circles and almost like hollowness (if that makes sense)? So I like the Shaba Complex for brightening my eye area, but now I’m super curious about the Avocado Eye Cream!!! Def want to hear more on that one. 😀

I know exactly what you mean by hollowness. It’s like there’s a visible line where you cheeks start and your undereyes finish lol

Thanks for the recommendation. It’s my bday soon and it’s going on the wishlist!

That’s so annoying isn’t it Kate, when something makes a whole load of promises and you have high hopes…for it not to work, especially when it’s expensive. I think your eyes are looking pretty good so maybe you don’t need it and thats why there was no difference 🙂

It’s tough finding he right eye cream. I’m still searching, but The Ordinary has a caffeine formula for their eye gel that works ok, but just ok.

I have tried it before but wasn’t impressed. It’s hydrating, but not much else.
My next undereye cream will be Kiehl’s Advocado cream thingy. If that doesn’t work, I’ll indulge in some Drunk Elephant…
